At St. Thomas More Church, the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters were preparing and serving whiting fish for the parish. The customers came in to dine with us and some came in to pick up a take-out dinner for their family.
If you missed it, you missed a delicious dinner. Remember that there is just one more dinner before Easter. 
A number of years ago, when our council was just starting, our knights looked for ways to help build our church community. Most of our families were fairly new to Chapel Hill. Some knights had been with our church since the beginning on Gimghoul Street and others were here for school, a new job, or to be with family.

We all remembered church events from our former parishes where were carnivals, barbecues, fish fries, spaghetti dinners, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials, St. Patrick’s Day, Oktoberfests and more. These parish events build church. They get families and children together.
Our mission was to find our niche. The church already held pancake breakfasts (hosted by the Men’s Club). What were we to do?
That is how we started our first fish fry. It was a financial disaster (we spent more then we made). We did not make money, but we were successful in starting something that was bigger than us. We believed that we were not doing things to make money. We were working to build a strong fraternal men’s group and make a difference in the community. This was our ministry.
We learned that we could have fun, demonstrate teamwork and family values, and show our parish men that there was something for them to do. Something for them to be part of that not only strengthen their families, but built a stronger parish. We could make a difference and have fun at the same time.
Today, our Lenten Fish Fries attract large crowds and families. We event get community walk-ins from nearby protestant churches. After all, who doesn’t like fish on Fridays during Lent. Our neighbors and community get to see a full parking lot on 15-501. You can be sure that they see our brightly lit building, church, and parking lot full of cars and say, “Wow! What’s that?” Maybe we might attract a fellow Catholic who is looking for a church to go home to, especially at Easter.
Yes, our council fish fries help build church. You and your family are doing it one brick, one fish, one plate of barbecue, one smile, one hello, and one warm, loving handshake at a time. The Knights of Columbus, An Experience of a Lifetime.

If this is your first year as a Knight, you may not know about Jerry Pilarski’s annual pig picking. He has been hosting this family event (for all ages and generations) for nearly 50 years as a way to give back to his family and friends. He is assisted and joined by other local families to make this annual event possible.

It is on New Years Day starting at 2:30 pm and meal at 3:30 pm. We are doing it in the country at a 4H Barn just off Orange Grove Rd, Hillsborough. You are invited and are encouraged to bring along the kids. They will keep busy exploring the 4H barn and are sure to make new friends.
Jerry Pilarski is cooking the shoulders for our enjoyment. Everyone is asked to bring a family favorite covered side dish or dessert. There is always the traditional corn bread, black-eyed peas, and greens. You are encouraged to show off your family favorite or ethnic dish.

The 4H Barn has plenty of seating and lots of room for you to walk around to meet and greet others. It is a great place for kids or grandchildren. There is a large open area that looks out over Orange County and Dairyland Road. Kids love to stroll around and have fun with other kids. Attire is rustic. Enjoy you day. Wear jeans and a casual shirt. Relax!

Eight candidates for council memberships received their First Degree. All conferees, joined by four other brother knights, then proceeded to their Second Degree ceremonial. The chamber was filled to capacity and all felt that the degree teams did an outstanding job. They spoke from the heart with sincerity and pride in our Order. The degree teams were both from Burlington, NC, and Pius X Council 3498 of Blessed Sacrament Church.
The Second Degree Ceremonial was dedicated to Sir Knight Jerry Pilarski in recognition of his unselfish dedication to the church, his parish, and the Knights of Columbus. Grand Knight Matt Raynor commented, “When the Knights are doing something, Jerry, is found there.” Jerry has prepared many meals and pig pickings for the Council and prepares all of the pork that is sold to support parish programs to aid the homeless and poor seeking assistance at our door.
The Knights of Columbus members progress through three ceremonials in their quest for full knighthood in their fraternal order. The Knights of Columbus were formed in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, a parish priest in New Haven, Connecticut. He was faced with a parish of many immigrants who worked in local factories and silver smelting plants. Still many others were without work due to bigotry and shunning by non-Catholics. Many died premature deaths, leaving widows and orphans to face a life of poverty. Some parish members were also tempted to join non-Catholic fraternal groups in hopes of gaining employment and acceptance.
Fr. McGivney’s dream was to form a core group of the faithful for the mutual benefit of the church and to provide for widows and orphans. That small group of men grew into what we now know as the Knights of Columbus.

St Thomas More School and the Knights of Columbus host the Special Olympians Basketball Team. The program includes exhibition games by Special Olympians and the St. Thomas More Boys and Girls JV and Varsity teams. Free Throw contest for elementary and middle school students in attendance. Raffle and prizes.

We are above all family and it is to our family and extended community family that we reach out to help and to ask for help. We can do great things for the less fortunate in our town, but we can do even more with the help of the parish and local community. We need everyone’s help now to support Operation Lamb at seven local sites on October 11, 12, and 13th.

We need everyone’s help now to support Operation Lamb at seven local sites on October 11, 12, and 13th. If you are a knight, a college student, an at home dad, a grandparent, a business leader, a local church (any church) community service person, or just a person with some free time, we can use you to fill 148 two-hour stations at local stores and food markets. No experience needed.
We provide the on-site training, give you the candy to pass out for free, and a canister to collect donations. We do not sell our candy. We give large Tootsie Roll candy bars to everyone we see. We expect nothing. We let the Holy Spirit take over from there.
We have been doing this in North Carolina since 1960 and have raised over $21 million dollars! Where does the money go? It stays here in our town. We support the Arc of Orange County, Special Olympics, and other groups who serve our children and adults with special or intellectual disabilities. There are no administrative costs. Our council provides for that. You provide the time, the smile, the handshake, and the encouraging word.

Oktoberfest in Chapel Hill is on Friday, September 27, 2013. You won’t find it anywhere in our town but right here at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
Oktoberfest is a 16-day celebration in Germany that starts in late September. Our postwar GI’s and early German immigrant families brought the celebration to America. In Germany, millions of people attend. You can avoid the crowds and join us for our Chapel Hill event with the Little German Band playing and dancing. There is food, beer, wine, dancing and live entertainment.
Cost is $25 per adult and includes brats, chicken, sauerkraut, potato salad, pretzel roll, cake and three adult beverages. If you are under 21 or a child, it is just $15 for a lifelong memory of fund and German music.
It’s a kid friendly event as Oktoberfest is a family celebration and festival.
Parish celebrations, festivals, and other community events have brought church members and their community together for many years. It is a time to be thankful for the many blessings we have received and for us to share our faith with our community.
Service to others and our community are the hallmark of the Knights of Columbus. Our Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast gives us a unique opportunity to recognize mothers and at the same time raise funds to support church charities, programs, and families.

Are you ready to join your brother knights as we host church mothers? We will need help setting up extra tables and chairs at 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning. There will be a lot of attendees and for some it will be their first visit to a Knights’ Pancake Breakfast.
We also need help with cooking, serving, and cleanup. Here’s the schedule for volunteers.

Our next BBQ Fundraiser is this weekend. In preparation, we need your help. We are cooking 1,000 lbs of pork and it all needs to be pulled. We are going to pull it on Friday evening, May 3, from 4-8 p.m. in the kitchen in the Parish Hall. Even if you can only join us for part of that time it will be a big help.
