District 9 Bowling Tournament

Are you ready to join other district knights for an afternoon of bowling? District 9 is hosting a Bowling Tournament! It is on April 27, 2013, at the AMF Durham Lanes at 4508 Durham Chapel Hill Boulevard, Durham.

It is on April 27, 2013, at the AMF Durham Lanes at 4508 Durham Chapel Hill Boulevard, Durham.

The tournament is for Knights, their wives, and potential Knights. Four-person teams will bowl three games against teams from other Councils, so you get to meet some of your fellow Knights in a fun setting.

The format will be 9-pin No-Tap, which means knocking down 9 pins on the first ball counts as a strike! All skill levels are welcome – the tournament uses handicaps to even up the competition. The cost is only $6 per bowler, including shoe rental. For more information, contact Gene Keeling.

Registration form instructions: For the “Average” line, if you bowl in a league, put down your average. If you don’t bowl in a league but have a pretty good idea what you score when you do bowl, put that down. If you have no idea what you might score, put a “?” on the line and they’ll assign you a score.

This is a hilarious comedy that pokes fun at Parochial School catechism as many of us remember it from our youth. Why not join and take a tour down memory lane and explore our childhood memories of catechism and Catholic school days.

For the Irish among us, at 6:30 before the play there will be a heavy hors d’oeuvres St. Patrick’s Day reception in Anthony Hall of the Church. That reception has a door charge of $25, which includes your first drink of green beer, wine or soft drink.

Council 9709 has already sent you the attached flyer, and you may have seen our advertisement in your Church bulletin, as we sent that advertisement directly to your Church staff member who handles bulletin announcements.

The Raleigh council needs our support and asks that some of our Council members join them for the evening.

We are raising money for those who need help. These are people not just from St. Thomas More Church, but from our community. Our church helps everyone! You can help!

No, you don’t have to hold a can in front of a store. You can help use with our project to cook, prep, package and sell 1,000 pounds of pork shoulders. Jerry Pilarski will be up all night slow cooking a massive amount of shoulders. We need your help pulling and packaging them on February 2nd.

This is really a fun event with fellow brother knights. We joke, kibitz (that’s to offer unwelcome advice or encouragement) , and have fun with each other. We call it bonding.

Support Our Seminarian Raffle

This year we will not be mailing the tickets, but the Council still needs your support to make this annual campaign a success. The one half of the face value of each ticket is retained by the council. We, in turn, contribute this money directly to individual seminarians in the Diocese of Raleigh, Last year we were able to sponsor five seminarians with $500 grants.

The prizes are great! There are two grand prizes. A cruise to Alaska and a trip to Hawaii. Of course, and above all, this is a project that supports our State Council and their many programs. Let’s help make it a success.

Tickets are sold at St. Thomas More Church after Mass on various upcoming weekends, as well as at Pancake Breakfasts and Fish Fries. Please stop by the table in the Narthex and either buy tickets for you yourself or pick up tickets for resale. You are encouraged to assist in the ticket sales in the Narthex.

All knights are also encouraged to make tickets available to family, business associates, and friends. Need extra? Just ask.

For our Brothers who attend Mass at the Newman Center or for whatever reason would find it more convenient to receive the tickets in the mail, please contact Brendan Fitzgerald and let him know how many tickets you need. He will promptly drop them in the mail. Order tickets

Letting Others See Our Work

Most people who volunteer or do charity work don’t want to beat their own drum. Their reward is the smile on the face of those they serve. However, it is important to keep track of what we do for other reasons.

Let’s make reporting easier!

Let’s say that someone challenges an organization’s efforts. “What do you do? How much have your contributed to others from what you have raised?” they might ask. These are valid questions and we do a good job of record keeping and reporting. Many things, however, get overlooked or missed.

For example, many knights drop off a bag of canned goods each week in the Narthex and think nothing of it. However, 52 bags, with a value of just $5 each, quickly adds up to nearly $300. Now, combine that effort with the many others who do the same thing. It is these and other acts of charity that go unrecorded and reported.

We bring this up at council meeting and there has not been an easy way for our Knights to provide the information. Until now, that is.

The council has started on-line reporting for some of our programs and projects. We are starting off slow with just one new report. It is the Knights’ Food For Families Report. You can access it from our council website under Programs and then Family. This one form covers food drives, soup kitchen work, pig roast fundraisers for the poor, and more.

On-line reports are compiled and are then available to the Grand Knight and Financial Secretary. The information is then used to provide updates to the members and council leadership on what we are doing.

What’s next? We will add other reports on LAMB, our annual raffle, and programs as they are identified. We will also use the same method to collect information for LAMB, Free Throw, and other council projects where we need to know who can help and when they can serve. On-line reporting is our way of putting the “fun” back into fundraising. No one likes to write reports, including this reporter.

This years Council Family Holiday Party will be on New Years Day starting at 3 pm. We are doing it in the country at a 4H Barn just off Orange Grove Rd, Hillsborough.

Jerry Pilarski is cooking the shoulders provided by the Council for our enjoyment. Everyone is asked to bring a family favorite covered side dish or dessert. There is always the traditional corn bread, black-eyed peas, and greens. You are encouraged to show off a family favorite or ethnic dish.

The 4H Barn has plenty of seating and lots of room for you to walk around to meet and greet others. It is a great place for kids or grandchildren. There is a large open area that looks out over Orange County and Dairyland Road. Kids love to stroll around and have fun with other kids. Attire is rustic. Enjoy you day. Wear jeans and a casual shirt. Relax!

Getting Back to Basics

Tonight the Friends and Family Hall was filled with about 500 children. It was not the normal St. Thomas More Church students. It was the children of the families not attending our Catholic school.

It was a wonderful sight. Young men and women from middle and high schools engaging in a review of the Catholic Mass. They started the night with the viewing of The Catholic Mass and then with a student game show using one student from each grade to challenge the students’ understanding of the Mass.

All of the students and instructors then moved to the sanctuary to hear Fr. James Labosky, our Parochial Vicar, explain the parts of the Liturgy of the Mass and Liturgy of the Eucharist. There was a lot to explain and a lot of questions to ask. The students asked good questions and the session could easily have been three hours, not one. We are very fortunate to have him with us to lead our children in faith development.

It reminded this writer of the importance of getting back to basics. We are doing this in our council by offering information on church teachings, programs, and history. Have you visited our new section on the Catechism? Learn more

If you are not inspired to learn more, maybe you just need to be reminded of the beauty and sacredness of our Mass. As our Lord said, “Do this in memory of me.”

Mass is celebrated each day in every time zone around the earth. If performed at the same hour, it is the biggest wave of continuous prayer, thanksgiving and blessing traveling around and around, as one. We join with millions of Catholics around the world to call upon the Holy Spirit to join us. Watch this video and be inspired, humbled, and thankful.
