This year we will not be mailing the tickets, but the Council still needs your support to make this annual campaign a success. The one half of the face value of each ticket is retained by the council. We, in turn, contribute this money directly to individual seminarians in the Diocese of Raleigh, Last year we were able to sponsor five seminarians with $500 grants.

The prizes are great! There are two grand prizes. A cruise to Alaska and a trip to Hawaii. Of course, and above all, this is a project that supports our State Council and their many programs. Let’s help make it a success.

Tickets are sold at St. Thomas More Church after Mass on various upcoming weekends, as well as at Pancake Breakfasts and Fish Fries. Please stop by the table in the Narthex and either buy tickets for you yourself or pick up tickets for resale. You are encouraged to assist in the ticket sales in the Narthex.

All knights are also encouraged to make tickets available to family, business associates, and friends. Need extra? Just ask.

For our Brothers who attend Mass at the Newman Center or for whatever reason would find it more convenient to receive the tickets in the mail, please contact Brendan Fitzgerald and let him know how many tickets you need. He will promptly drop them in the mail. Order tickets

The Council has held its Free Throw competition and has announced the finalists. This annual event was held at St. Thomas More Church on Saturday, January 12, 2013.

This years Council Family Holiday Party will be on New Years Day starting at 3 pm. We are doing it in the country at a 4H Barn just off Orange Grove Rd, Hillsborough.

Jerry Pilarski is cooking the shoulders provided by the Council for our enjoyment. Everyone is asked to bring a family favorite covered side dish or dessert. There is always the traditional corn bread, black-eyed peas, and greens. You are encouraged to show off a family favorite or ethnic dish.

The 4H Barn has plenty of seating and lots of room for you to walk around to meet and greet others. It is a great place for kids or grandchildren. There is a large open area that looks out over Orange County and Dairyland Road. Kids love to stroll around and have fun with other kids. Attire is rustic. Enjoy you day. Wear jeans and a casual shirt. Relax!

Getting Back to Basics

Tonight the Friends and Family Hall was filled with about 500 children. It was not the normal St. Thomas More Church students. It was the children of the families not attending our Catholic school.

It was a wonderful sight. Young men and women from middle and high schools engaging in a review of the Catholic Mass. They started the night with the viewing of The Catholic Mass and then with a student game show using one student from each grade to challenge the students’ understanding of the Mass.

All of the students and instructors then moved to the sanctuary to hear Fr. James Labosky, our Parochial Vicar, explain the parts of the Liturgy of the Mass and Liturgy of the Eucharist. There was a lot to explain and a lot of questions to ask. The students asked good questions and the session could easily have been three hours, not one. We are very fortunate to have him with us to lead our children in faith development.

It reminded this writer of the importance of getting back to basics. We are doing this in our council by offering information on church teachings, programs, and history. Have you visited our new section on the Catechism? Learn more

If you are not inspired to learn more, maybe you just need to be reminded of the beauty and sacredness of our Mass. As our Lord said, “Do this in memory of me.”

Mass is celebrated each day in every time zone around the earth. If performed at the same hour, it is the biggest wave of continuous prayer, thanksgiving and blessing traveling around and around, as one. We join with millions of Catholics around the world to call upon the Holy Spirit to join us. Watch this video and be inspired, humbled, and thankful.

Charity Wine Tasting for Scholarship Fund

There is a charity wine tasting at St. Thomas More Church on Saturday, November 17th (noon – 4 pm). Why not join in this event and support a great cause? 50% of the ticket prices, in addition to 10% of orders taken at the Expo, will be donated to the Saint Thomas More Scholarship Fund.

October Events at Our Council

Are you keeping up with the many events and projects of the council? We publish a calendar of events at our council meetings and provide copies of the minutes to you. If you have missed a meeting or two, come on back and see what we are up to.

Here are some highlights of upcoming events

Pancake breakfast – October 14th. Tom Stoffel and his team need your help setting up, serving, and cleaning up.
Year of the Faith begins on October 11th. Learn more from the Vatican’s site.
Oktoberfest – October 26th in the Friends and Family Hall. A family event. Those interested in helping with the event should contact the Deputy Grand Knight. Join other knights as we sell tickets after mass the weekend of October 13.14
Knights Special Olympics – November 18th, St. Thomas More Church School, 4-6 p.m.
Pulling Pig for the Poor – Date TBD. Jerry Pilarski and crew will cook about 85 shoulders. We get to pull the meat off the bone. The first BBQ fundraiser for the Financial Assistance Ministry was on August 18 and 19. We sold out in a day and the proceeds went to assist with the poor who seek help from our church.

As we enter the Christmas season, let’s renew our efforts to support the council. There is much work to be done as we reach out to serve our community, our church, and our Lord.

King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is a story of a spiritual journey. Their quest for the Holy Grail started with a forceful journey ended in failure. When they changed their methods and made individual, personal quests, with prayer and courage and not relying on the paths of others, they succeeded.

We, as Knights, gather our strength through our unity with one another, but spiritually, we are guided by the teachings of Holy Mother the Church.

Did you know that our church youth are on a spiritual journey with the Catechism of the Catholic Church? Georgie Clemens, Total Youth Ministry Director, has also encouraged their parents to join them, as they seek to learn more about our church and its teachings.

You, too, can start your personal journey and subscribe to the book on-line. Read a little bit each day. You can begin your day with enlightenment or end it in thoughtful reflection with a daily lesson. The one-year journey of lessons will begin on Thursday, October 11th. You will receive a new email lesson each morning.

Working for Others

We had a terrific first BBQ fundraising event! We cooked 411 lbs. of pork and sold a cooked amount of 170 lbs. so fast we ran out by the 3rd weekend mass.We collected for Mary Ellen’s St. Thomas More community relief assistance ministry $561.00.

This project was the Knights’ response to a call to serve others by raising funds to replace thousands of dollars that were not longer available to the poor. Mary Ellen McGuire reached out to the Knights’ and our answer was to find a way to help. Mary Ellen writes, “As the Psalmist says, “When the just cry out, the Lord hears and rescues them from all distress.” Many thanks to the Knights for supporting this ministry, and special kudos to Jerry, Gene, Matt, Joe, Tom, John and Peter! The funds will help many families experiencing financial distress, and my team and I will do our best to be good stewards of the funds you raised.”

Gene Keeling reported, “The money will go a long way in helping the poor and less fortunate in our community. We could have sold twice that amount, but we will need to have more council members join in these events. Those that did, and you know who you are, I truly wish to express a heartfelt thanks for your tireless work and service to our council.”

The call is out to double our efforts next time. The demand is there for all that we have to sell. Let’s join the charter BBQ crew in their efforts to “feed My sheep.” Let’s let our community know that we hear their call for help and the Knights’ are ready to serve them.

We can make a form to fit your program, event, or project

Future on-line form filling will include events and reservations. You will be able to just fill in a form and the project or program chairman can then open a spreadsheet with all responses listed.

This is a major step, as we move towards working smarter, not harder. All projects include a lot of email going back and forth. We lose some and miss others.

If you, as a program chairman, need help with a poll of interested people, let the blogmaster know. He can generate the poll and send the responses to you.

Just think about it…. We can now ask who can help with a pancake breakfast and they can include the job they want to help with; including times available. So, before you send out that email query, contact the council blogmaster.

Our Council’s website is constantly changing and may now be the best looking and most functional council website in the state. We are using WordPress.com as the service provider. The format It is newer and much improved in content. A special feature is News

Our site includes static pages (pages that are informational and usually do not change during the council year) and web blog/post pages. Our News/Home page is a blog or web log. We add stories here as to what is going on in our post. And, unlike email, which is viewed by just council members, it is public and visible by our church community.

When you visit the site, you see current news as the first thing you see. It is our HOME page. Local current news, stories, and announcements will appear under News. You can also find stories about what we have been doing 2005! Search for members of the council or topics in Search box. Looking for a story on the Squires? Just enter squires and all stories on the site about our squires will appear for reading.

The site’s masthead images will change and display other photos as pages are changed.

Under Programs and Projects you will find new items appearing with photos, a movie, or a slide show. Topics will include projects like the Pancake Breakfasts and programs like Lamb.
