Third Degree Event in September

A Third Degree will be held in Henderson, NC, on Sunday September 18, 2016. The Fathers Parker-Wood Council 9365 will host this degree at Saint James Catholic Church, 3275 US-158 Bypass, Henderson, NC 27537

Registration for candidates and observers will begin at 2:00 pm. The degree will begin promptly at 3:00 pm. The cost is $12.00 for candidates and observers. Candidates must be paid for by the Council so please contact John Marino or Grand Knight Newton Grant now so that our team can take a Council check with them to pay for attendees.

Arrival time is important as candidates and observers must be on time and register between 2:00 and 2:30 pm. Doors do not open before 2:00 pm and those arriving earlier will not be allowed to enter the facilities until registration begins.

The dress code is at least business casual, which means no tee shirts, shorts, or jeans. A sport jacket with open collar is the sign of a well dress Sir Knight. The class size will be limited to the first 50 candidates so it is very important that our council RSVP’s in time.

A luncheon and refreshments will be served following the degree.

Directions: From South (Durham, NC): Follow I-85 north, Use exit 209 Poplar Creek Rd., Turn right onto Poplar Creek road., continue till intersection of Poplar Creek Road and US-158 Bypass (Shell Gas Station) then turn left onto US-158 Bypass. Louisiana Disaster Relief

In response to the devastation, the Supreme Council has launched an online donation drive to assist with local relief operations. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to relief efforts.

louisiana-flood-relief Southern Louisiana is being hit by what is called “the worst natural disaster since Superstorm Sandy.”

Several people have died, with tens of thousands of others forced to leave their homes. More than 30,000 people have been rescued from the flooded areas, many seeking refuge in emergency shelters.

The Knights of Columbus has a long tradition of providing disaster relief, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. Our communities, like the people of Southern Louisiana, need our time, our efforts and our financial assistance. We are going to do all that we can, working with the Louisiana State Council and local councils, to help those most in need as a result of the flooding.

We Need Volunteers for Operation LAMB

We need your help with Operation LAMB. Volunteers are needed to serve as site captains for this year’s program and to pass out candy on drive days. We also need help with selling excess Tootsie Rolls at the church just before Halloween.

Celebrating with our Parish Religious

Our annual Religious Appreciation Dinner is on September 16 at the University Club in Durham. This is a wonderful opportunity to show our appreciation to those that give so much to us.

Our annual Religious Appreciation Dinner is on September 16 at the University Club in Durham. This is a wonderful opportunity to show our appreciation to those that give so much to us. It’s also a great social event for the Knights as we include our spouses and socialize with our extended family–The Knights of Columbus.

There is a place for you!

We will gather at 6:00 and plan to sit down to dinner at 6:30. The event will be held at the University Club – 3100 Tower Blvd #1700, Durham, NC 27707. Cost is $30 (tax and tip is included) per person and includes a elegant buffet dinner, a separate dessert buffet, iced tea and coffee. There will also be a cash bar.

Supporting the Special Olympics

John Aluise was hard at work last month chairing the Bocce Tournament and arranging for teams/players for our tournament. There were ten Special Olympics athletes participating and they were joined by Bishop Burbidge.

This was the same day as our annual Parish Festival on June 20th, The council also assisted with food serving following the 5:15 mass.

The council Bocce Tournament is one of the Knights of Columbus’ fund raising projects for Operation LAMB, which donates all proceeds to local agencies who serve those with intellectual disabilities.

Patriotism and Catholic Heritage

Our Fourth Degree Knights are gearing up for their annual trek to Caldwell in rural Durham County to lead their annual July 4th Parade. It is an annual event that gives them the opportunity to demonstrate patriotism in Catholic gentlemen.

What are you doing on July 4th? Why not join them for the parade and picnic that follows? It all starts around 10 a.m. with picnic area setup and family gatherings. The parade begins to move at 10:45, but starts at 11 a.m. (but be in Caldwell by 10:30!)

There will be hot dogs and hamburgers for the Knights and their families. You are asked to bring along a dish to share. Can’t cook? Stop by Bojangles for a bucket of chicken! If you are broke or light on funds this week, go join them anyway. They will feed you and love to have you there with them.

Bocce Tournament 2015

We still need more teams/players for our Bocce Tournament on Saturday, during the Parish Festival. The festival starts following 5:15 Mass (about 6:20 pm). You can sign up as team of four, or as an individual.

This tournament is one of the Knights of Columbus’ fund raising projects for Operation LAMB. LAMB proceeds go to local agencies who serve those with intellectual disabilities.

We will have 10 Special Olympics athletes participating in the tournament.

We are asking for a $10 donation for each player.

Books for Bertie County

The Catholic Daughters asked Fr. Mike Kerin from Bertie County
speak to them at Faith on Tap a couple of weeks ago. He shared the needs of their Mission and the people they serve in the poorest county in NC. The Catholic presence is less than 1% there, so his work is true evangelization.

The Knights received a request for support for books for Bertie County Glenmary Missioners.

Bertie County is where they have discovered the actual “Lost Colony” site, and are not
publicizing it to keep the amateur archeologists out of the dig. Oops, the word is out! WRAL and local newspapers reported this story. Learn more

We asked how we could help, and he asked for books for school children for summer reading. It just happened that St. Thomas More School’s used book sale was held recently and there were books left over when they cleaned up after the sale.

Ann Banes said, “We had a lot of books for the mission and needed help with a truck and some muscle to get them down there. I talked with him on Thurs. and he said he would be in Raleigh this Friday. If we can coordinate it, we may be able to have him direct us to the site where we can unload the books.” The Knights responded and the books were delivered.

School Bells Ringing

The new council year is fast approaching. Soon we will have the election of officers, installation and then we get to work rebuilding our council to serve the parish and assist the church. This year we have web-based training for officers and even general members who are interested in the functions and operations of the Knights of Columbus.

The Knights of Columbus invites you to take part in a web training session for fraternal leaders. This session will be geared toward ALL fraternal leaders and the council encourages you to join in as you will benefit from this webinar. This webinar will discuss the importance of finishing the fraternal year on a high note and getting off to a quick start for the next fraternal year. This town hall-type meeting will focus on:

Finishing the year strong by measuring success and planning
Ensuring a smooth changeover in council leadership and getting off to a quick start
Planning ahead and keeping on track for a successful fraternal year

Please SAVE THE DATE and PASS THE WORD!! This training session will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. ALL fraternal leaders whether finishing their term or newly elected or appointed are encouraged to attend.

“When Called by a Panther, Don’t Anther”

When Ogden Nash wrote these words nearly a century ago, he didn’t realize how prophetic they were in our age of robocalls and junk mail. Everybody in the world, it seems, feels entitled to some of our hard-earned cash.

There is another call we regularly receive, this one from God. It is simpler and more direct, and He doesn’t hassle us. When we take care of our family and children, when we do our job at work, when we participate in Parish activities, we are answering God’s call. The quid pro quo isn’t immediately obvious, but the rewards of taking care of our families, our jobs, and our Parish are tremendous, in this world and the next.

After, family, home, and Church, come the Knights of Columbus. The Knights do a LOT of work for our families and Parish and are indispensible members of our community. St. Thomas More would be a very different place without the work we do.

Right now, the Knights are in a bit of difficulty. It appears that the work associated with several top offices has scared a lot of potential talent away from these important jobs. Make no mistake, these posts are extremely important to our mission, and need to be filled. We are looking for a couple of generous souls who are willing to give their time and talent to helping make the Knights work for everybody.

“Dieu lo vult!” was the cry of the crusaders —“God wills it!” This is also true with the posts of Grand Knight and Deputy Grand Knight in our Council. Will you be the person who generously steps forward to do a VERY important job? The Knights will be grateful. The Parish will be grateful. And YOU will have the satisfaction of stepping up when you are needed.
