Oktoberfest is all set for Friday, Sept 26, 2014. It will be from 6 pm to 10 pm.The Catholic Daughters will join us again as co-participants.

Tom Stoffel has announced that the menu will be brats, chicken, sauerkraut, potato salad, pretzel roll, and cake. It also includes three adult beverages. All this for the still low price for $25. Children under 21 are just $15.
Good news for families this year. We have added a new family promotion package of $60 for parent/child under 21. Sorry, this does not include extended families or children of legal drinking age.
The Little German Band is also returning. Their music is the highlight of the evening, except, of course, for the lederhosen and festive attire of some of our brother knights.

Our council has been a steady and strong supporter of Operation Lamb for over 20 years. What is Operation Lamb? The LAMB program was started in 1960, became a statewide program in 1974, and was formally established as a public, nonprofit, fully tax-deductible 501(c)3 charity in 1999, named the LAMB Foundation of NC, Inc. The sole purpose of the foundation is to raise funds and distribute them to accredited organizations and institutions throughout the state that assist people with intellectual disabilities.
Our council has been a steady and strong supporter of Operation LAMB for over 20 years. What is Operation LAMB? It stands for Least Among My Brethren.The LAMB program was started in 1960, became a statewide program in 1974, and was formally established as a public, nonprofit, fully tax-deductible 501(c)3 charity in 1999, named the LAMB Foundation of NC, Inc. The sole purpose of the foundation is to raise funds and distribute them to accredited organizations and institutions throughout the state that assist people with intellectual disabilities.
The knights have raised over $21 million dollars since 1974 for North Carolinians. That money has been raised all without a single paid employee, thanks to the more than 15,000 Knights of Columbus statewide who, along with their family and friends, stand long hours
giving away Tootsie Rolls and asking for donations. Fully, 93% of the funds raised go directly to charity. The only major operational expenses are for the Tootsie Rolls, aprons and an outside accounting firm.
Knights fan out over the area and throughout the state to pass out Tootsie Rolls. We never sell them, we just give them away with a warm welcome and a big smile. We are rewarded by the generous donations of shoppers.
Our council is conducting its annual Operation LAMB Tootsie Roll campaign on the weekend of October 10-12 to raise funds for people with Intellectual Disabilities in our community. The agencies who will receive LAMB funds include the Special Olympics, Special Education Programs in Chapel Hill, Orange and Chatham counties, ARC, Club Nova, Voices Together, OE Enterprises and Chatham Trades.
The Knights need volunteers from the parish. This is a wonderful opportunity for parishioners, especially our teenagers, to contribute to a very worthwhile community service project. It’s fun, easy and rewarding–you just need to wear a bright yellow vest, smile, give out Tootsie Rolls, and ask quietly for donations for a couple of hours in front of a supermarket in the area. If you have not seen the center’s Wall of Honor designated to honor veteran participants of the Seymour Center and Central Orange Senior Center, stop by and check it out!
Sir Knight Joe Acciarito will be honored in June as the Wall of Honor is renewed with eight veterans from the Chapel Hill Community. Other June honorees are: Nicholas Terrell, Clyde D. Perry, Jeppie Foushee, Lewis Atwater, John Dossett, Walter Mack and Joan Shevlin.
The ceremony will be on June 30th at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel Hill Seymour Center. There will be a small reception and a time for personal reflections.

The wall is not only a way expressing community gratitude to those who served our Country, it enables other participants and visitors who frequent the Center to appreciate and learn more about their peers. Current honorees on the wall are Russell Blackwell, Thomas Hackney, Wayne Hung, Richard Tofte, Johnnie Johnson, Charles Alston, Roy Henry Gore, and Sir Knight Peter O’Grady.

Oktoberfest is a 16-day celebration in Germany that starts in late September. Our postwar GI’s and early German immigrant families brought the celebration to America. In Germany, millions of people attend. You can avoid the crowds and join us for our Chapel Hill event with the Little German Band playing and dancing. There is food, beer, wine, dancing and live entertainment.
Cost is $25 per adult and includes brats, chicken, sauerkraut, potato salad, pretzel roll, cake and three adult beverages. If you are under 21 or a child, it is just $15 for a lifelong memory of fund and German music.
It’s a kid friendly event as Oktoberfest is a family celebration and festival.
Parish celebrations, festivals, and other community events have brought church members and their community together for many years. It is a time to be thankful for the many blessings we have received and for us to share our faith with our community.
Service to others and our community are the hallmark of the Knights of Columbus. Our Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast gives us a unique opportunity to recognize mothers and at the same time raise funds to support church charities, programs, and families.

Are you ready to join your brother knights as we host church mothers? We will need help setting up extra tables and chairs at 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning. There will be a lot of attendees and for some it will be their first visit to a Knights’ Pancake Breakfast.
We also need help with cooking, serving, and cleanup. Here’s the schedule for volunteers.
This has been a very successful fundraiser for STM School and parish. Thank you for all that you are doing to make it a success.
Most people who volunteer or do charity work don’t want to beat their own drum. Their reward is the smile on the face of those they serve. However, it is important to keep track of what we do for other reasons.
Let’s make reporting easier!
Most people who volunteer or do charity work don’t want to beat their own drum. Their reward is the smile on the face of those they serve. However, it is important to keep track of what we do for other reasons.
Let’s say that someone challenges an organization’s efforts. “What do you do? How much have your contributed to others from what you have raised?” they might ask. These are valid questions and we do a good job of record keeping and reporting. Many things, however, get overlooked or missed.
For example, many knights drop off a bag of canned goods each week in the Narthex and think nothing of it. However, 52 bags, with a value of just $5 each, quickly adds up to nearly $300. Now, combine that effort with the many others who do the same thing. It is these and other acts of charity that go unrecorded and reported.
We bring this up at council meeting and there has not been an easy way for our Knights to provide the information. Until now, that is.
The council has started on-line reporting for some of our programs and projects. We are starting off slow with just one new report. It is the Knights’ Food For Families Report. You can access it from our council website under Programs and then Family. This one form covers food drives, soup kitchen work, pig roast fundraisers for the poor, and more.
On-line reports are compiled and are then available to the Grand Knight and Financial Secretary. The information is then used to provide updates to the members and council leadership on what we are doing.
What’s next? We will add other reports on LAMB, our annual raffle, and programs as they are identified. We will also use the same method to collect information for LAMB, Free Throw, and other council projects where we need to know who can help and when they can serve. On-line reporting is our way of putting the “fun” back into fundraising. No one likes to write reports, including this reporter.

Here are some highlights of upcoming events
As we enter the Christmas season, let’s renew our efforts to support the council. There is much work to be done as we reach out to serve our community, our church, and our Lord.
We had a terrific first BBQ fundraising event! We cooked 411 lbs. of pork and sold a cooked amount of 170 lbs. so fast we ran out by the 3rd weekend mass.We collected for Mary Ellen’s St. Thomas More community relief assistance ministry $561.00.

This project was the Knights’ response to a call to serve others by raising funds to replace thousands of dollars that were not longer available to the poor. Mary Ellen McGuire reached out to the Knights’ and our answer was to find a way to help. Mary Ellen writes, “As the Psalmist says, “When the just cry out, the Lord hears and rescues them from all distress.” Many thanks to the Knights for supporting this ministry, and special kudos to Jerry, Gene, Matt, Joe, Tom, John and Peter! The funds will help many families experiencing financial distress, and my team and I will do our best to be good stewards of the funds you raised.”
Gene Keeling reported, “The money will go a long way in helping the poor and less fortunate in our community. We could have sold twice that amount, but we will need to have more council members join in these events. Those that did, and you know who you are, I truly wish to express a heartfelt thanks for your tireless work and service to our council.”
The call is out to double our efforts next time. The demand is there for all that we have to sell. Let’s join the charter BBQ crew in their efforts to “feed My sheep.” Let’s let our community know that we hear their call for help and the Knights’ are ready to serve them.

We will have a quick meeting at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person in advance, $30 per person at the door. The price includes your meal (including iced tea and coffee), tax and gratuity. We will also have a cash bar.
