First Lenten Fish Fry for 2024

The first Knights of Columbus Parish Lenten Fish Fry is Friday, February 16th.

That’s right. It is almost Lent with Ash Wednesday coming up fast this month on February 14th.  Once again, we will start the season by having our first annual fish fry!  The first event will be on Friday, February 16th.  Although most join us for dinner after the 5:15 p.m. mass, we do start serving at 5 p.m.  Dinner is open to parish members and our Chapel Hill community.  Takeout is also available.  Can we look forward to seeing you? Mark your calendars now!  Share the news with your friends, too.

We are having three events this year.

For those of you who are new to the council or our community, our Knights have held fish fries since about Easter 2000 and we have continued to host them as a parish community and family event.  Like our pancake breakfasts, our goal was to “build church” by giving our parish member families a communal place to gather with family and friends and get to know other parish families.

We have tried different sources over the years for our tasty fish and continue to work to provide the best food and service to our families.  We think we have a winning menu for you and it is affordable, with children’s meals discounted.

Want to get involved?  Our events allow us to demonstrate fatherhood,  brotherhood, and camaraderie as Knights of Columbus.  Talk to one of the Knights.  Ask how you can join.

Passing of Dr. Juan Jose Alva, MD

The Council has lost a founding member and our Founding Grand Knight, Dr. Juan Jose Alva. Juan was a devout Catholic, and his faith was central to his life. He was ordained as a Carmelite of the Third Order and was devoted to the Virgin Mary. His funeral mass is at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Monday, 26 August 2024, at 1 p.m. Interment follows at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery on Legion Road, Chapel Hill.

We were blessed to have Dr. Alva in our parish and community. He was a quiet, but determined man on a mission to share his life and medical skills with others, especially the immigrants among us and in Argentina. His biography is but a condensed view of his life, mission, and service. His journey was not easy, but his determination to succeed and to make the United States his home is remarkable. It is full of “firsts” as a youth, a student, a medical doctor, an Army Doctor and military conflict doctor, and local family doctor practitioner. But, it is so much more. Here is a link to his story.

We shall miss Juan, but his wonderful wife, Elsa, and family are with us. They invite the parish to join them on Sunday night, August 25th, for the viewing at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home, Durham, from 6-8 p.m. The Holy Rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

The funeral mass is on Monday, August 26th, at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael Street, Chapel Hill. Time for the mass is 1 p.m. Saint Matthews Parish will join us for the funeral mass.

For the honors, the Knights of the Fourth Degree of Durham and Chapel Hill will serve. Members will wear regalia without sword or Baldric. The honor guard teams are requested to arrive at 12:15 p.m. to participate in casket honors.

Catholic Daughters

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas was formed in 2012. The Regent consists of catholic women of St. Thomas More who do acts of charity, events and programs at for our parish and community. This work is sometimes done in collaboration with the Paul J. Trageser Council 10910 Knights of Columbus. Collaborations help both the Knights and Catholic Daughters continue the great works within the parish community while providing a community event.

Some of the collaborative events we partner with the Catholic Daughters on are the Pancake Breakfast, Fish Fry, Oktoberfest, and Parish Pride Day. Additional events and fundraisers are joint ventures and we attempt to partner with the Catholic Daughters to ensure financial and volunteer support is possible.

Pancake Breakfast

Our pancake breakfasts have a long, long history and are a tradition at St. Thomas More Church.  The breakfasts were a periodic event of the Men’s Club.  The Men’s Club included all men of the church and included non-catholic husbands and friends of the church.

The Men’s Club was the go-to group of men who helped build and repair our church and church school.  They wired buildings, landscaped, put in telephone/light poles at the school, raised money for the school and helped everywhere they could.  They still perform this important ministry and most are Knights of Columbus.

The Council now hosts the monthly pancake breakfasts to continue this tradition.  You will find not only knights, but STM youth group, Men’s Club members, Catholic Daughters, wives, grandchildren and children of knights.  You will also find friends of the knights pitching in.  That’s because it is a church ministry and all are welcome to assist with cooking, setup, serving, cleanup, and tearing down tables and chairs.

We are building church by making possible a gathering of families and friends one Sunday a month.  How about you?  Have you brought your family to the Friends and Family Hall for breakfast? Visit our square payment page to pay online and see our offerings.

Fish Fry at St. Thomas More Church

Fish Fry 2024 is upon us and this year things are going really well as we spend time together as Brother Knights helping to build our Catholic Community. Dinners are $15 with kid’s plates available. There are discounts for large families spending over $50. As always, TAKE OUT is available.

The fish plate is either several fillets or coconut shrimp. Entrees come with, coleslaw or hushpuppies. and choice of

fries or homemade macaroni and cheese. There is even a grilled cheese sandwich option for special diets and timid children.

We have been assisted by many members, their families, and the Catholic Daughters.

When you support the Knights at any of their events, raffles, or dinners, you are supporting not only them, but help the Knights and Catholic Daughters fund their support programs and for the poor, veterans, homeless, seminarians, and other special needs of the parish.

We are even receiving help from local students seeking an opportunity to help in the community and earn service hours. If you have a student needing hours, we can always use “mess cooks,” set up, table maintenance, and teardown help. Just let Rodger Traynor know that you have a volunteer. Don’t forget to bring your student hours certification form for completion by the Knights.

Our final fish fry of this Lenten season is on March 15th

Brother Knights, we need your help, too. Please sign up at the yellow link listed below. You will see the hours we need help and positions open.

If you are “old, infirm, or otherwise unable to help” we still look forward to you joining us. You can sit at the entrance and be a “Knights of Columbus Greeter.” You can also kick back, enjoy the meal, and table hop to visit with new and old friends.

This is a SPECIAL NEEDS job that Jerry Pilarski started as a means to show our council in action and to personally invite others to consider joining the Knights. He spent years as a Sunday and special event meet-and-greeter and continued to serve in this position well into his 90’s. Many of the kids that stopped by to see “their Jerry” on Sunday became parents themselves and they continued the tradition of stopping by to greet Jerry. You can help fill that void by proudly wearing your Council Badge and a big smile each Sunday. Take time before mass to welcome everyone, opening the door, and giving a big smile and a hello to each and every kid. Then after mass help with passing out bulletins. Who knows, you, too, may be sought by our parish children as they eagerly join their parents for mass. Here are a few pictures of Jerry in action as a lifelong Knight and founding member of Council 10910.
